iPod Flirting

Not sure if this is just a concept my friends and I know of (and are guilty of), but is anyone else aware of iPod flirting? It’s a passive flirting method which really doesn’t result in anything meaningful–you just covertly look to see what he/she is listening to while making your musical tastes known as well by blatantly displaying and shuffling through your iPod. It’s pretty stupid.
However, I think this one girl took iPod flirting to the next level. I was at a vegetarian bakery in the West Village on Monday morning when the cute punk rock barista behind the counter, who I noticed eyeing me earlier, asked to see my iPod. I found this peculiar, but went along with it. She then said something along the lines of “This is the good iPod, right?”
I highly doubt she asked to see my iPod just to see what kind it was. An iPod is an iPod, nah mean? She was totally looking to see what my music taste was (which, at that very moment, was Joan of Arc’s upcoming album Flowers), right? Or maybe I’m just delusional.
Not everyone is as forward as this girl though. Sometimes you’ll need something else to start the conversation. Something a little less creepy. Like these headphones:

“Where did you get those headphones?” is what flirters will ask when they see you rocking these beautiful matte black DJ headphones due this fall from AIAIAI, particularly because they lack any brand insignia on the product! The perfect in.
Or you can just talk to someone, like a normal person.

This happened to me on a flight to LA. The guy next to me started talking to me and asked to check out my ipod to see what I was listening too. I too checked out the music he was listening to.
I was listening to Orchid, he was listening to some shitty techno.
It continued to be a mismatch in heaven when he proceeded to tell me the reason why he was going to LA was to kill a man. Hm.
hah! what do you mean there was no overlap between Orchid and techno? I often listen to Orchid while playing techno at the same time. jk
