PETA Stages Nude Invasion of Rockefeller Center’s Skating Rink

PETA can’t even do nudity right. After a week in which Keeley Hazell posed topless and uncovered for them and New York City basically ruled nude streakers are relatively legal, the People For the Ethical Treatment Of Animals Not In Their Shelters asked gold medal-winning Olympic figure skater Tai Babilonia to strip down– to her leather skates!– and race around the rink at Rockefeller Center during the lunch rush to get a big publicity for them.

Well, the organization received its much-desired press… although maybe not in the way they expected:

Blogs across the country are mocking the organization for allowing Babilonia not only to wear leather skates…

…but wait… is she even naked? I mean, is she even pretending to be naked? Seriously, that’s not fooling anyone:

The Deceiver says PETA lied in its press release, too:

There will be no sequined costume for Olympic icon Tai Babilonia on Tuesday–in fact, there will be no costume at all. The champion figure skater will bare all on the famed ice-skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza.

Whoops. Maybe Babilonia planned to go naked, but the cold weather finally hit New York City this week…

I’m an animal rights activist and PETA do no good other than make us all look like retards. The leather skates was stupid, and not going fully naked made it pointless but please see through the retarded attention seeking stunt and try and concentrate on the message, that fur is an absolute disgrace and totally unnecessary.

Fuck you PETA, fuck you…

Thanks for asking non-vegans to advocate for veganism, once again. Thanks. *eye roll*

I’m not a big fan of PETA, though interested in animal rights. My question to Dave is “how do you know it isn’t vinyl in the skates?”.

Valerie commented on Nov 26 09 at 7:05 pm

There is no such thing as “animal rights”. Stop with that ridiculous concept. Nevertheless, humans do have duties toward them. PETA is to the liberals what the creationists are for the conservative. Just a bunch of extremist wackos. (I also hate PETA cause they make me troll on internet….. ;-)

Make Her Go Back And Skate In The Nude (truly) Or Sue Them For False Ads

Fur and leather are NOT the same. Leather shoes are made from cattlehide which is a byproduct of our meat industry. You get a lot of cattlehide from one cow. Fur is made from animals slaughtered en masse, and you need a LOT of small animals to make one fur coat. The meat is, of course, wasted.

Petter commented on Nov 27 09 at 6:53 am

@Petter — Nope. You fail. Mink carcasses are rendered into fish-feed and other animal foods. So they’re not wasted at all… unless you think animals have less of a right to eat than humans. No? I didn’t think so. Now go and have a seat over there…

Fang commented on Nov 27 09 at 3:46 pm

I completely agree with Dave! Its so nice to see a like minded activist out there.

@ Valerie - As a former figure skater I can tell you that while top-level synthetic skates exist, they are not very common. In fact, as far as I know, you can’t get them in stores. You’d have to get them custom made. Elvis Stojko wore a pair for a while in a bid to find something that could hold up a bit better to the jumps without the weight of leather and be cheaper - but I never saw it catch on anywhere else. I imagine the ‘breaking in’ period would be a lot different with synthetics. Maybe even more difficult to achieve the flexibility you get with leather as it wears in? Nonetheless, I’d still LOVE to see a good pair of non-leather figure skates get developed.

jt commented on Nov 27 09 at 10:04 pm

@Fang..The thing is..even if it wasn’t rendered into feed, and piled onto a steaming heap of other dead mink carcasses, something is going to eat it..insects and carrion, and all that…that’s the problem with this whole thing is that there is always something to eat something else, and therefore there is no such thing as “waste.” The issue is people always project human feelings onto things..and its a lot easier to imagine a cow or a mink in pain that an asparagus or a maggot.

Ah, the lazy denial argument - “Well, animals do it too!! Why can’t I?”
So, you find your morality in animal behavior? Hmmm, very sophisticated.
A giant difference is that humans ARE AWARE that other beings feel pain and commit the pain. No proof has been given that animals have the ability to determine their prey is feeling pain when they search for food for survival. Most recent studies indicate that chimpanzees are aware of pain in other organisms.
Humans know about the pain they cause and do it anyway because they put their desires over consideration for another being.
Looked up the definition for sociopath lately, @JMH, @Fang, @Shawalone?
Aww, getting angry that some people have decide to act in accordance to their conscience and you it makes you feel bad and threatened because you think they will take your rights away?
No shame at all when you hate people just for having the moral character to live in accordance with their values. Pure intellectual dishonesty.

Jota commented on Nov 29 09 at 3:16 am

I don’t get it, why would PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals) protest Thanksgiving … guess this ol’ redneck musta missed something!

JCB commented on Nov 30 09 at 6:52 pm

@jota, you have the same ridiculous sense of self-righteousness that the most die-hard gay bashers happen to employ on a regular basis. In fact, your very premise is wrong - many other animals enjoy causing pain or toying with their prey. Thinking of not only primates, but dolphins and cats.
Nobody gets angry at vegans and vegetarians - while we may consider their form of conscience silly or poseur, they’re also eating healthier and making responsible decisions based on a form of morality they subscribe to. The vast majority of vegetarians don’t see it fit to get into a philosophical argument about meat eating since they realize humans aren’t going to change any time soon, and it’s exactly the same as a Mormon going door to door.
Regardless, your false sense or moral superiority just shows how much of a jackass you are, and does nothing for your point in the slightest.

I will be eating a nice big hamburger for lunch, and then off to KFC for dinner…the more the bird was tortured the better. Thank you PETA, you holier-than-thou idiots, for proving just how stupid vegans are. Now where is my cat? I want to kick her a few times.
